Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Kremlin, Montana. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty is hair analysis, and we operate testing centers in cities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be used. Hair testing can be configured to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or alternative customized parameters.

Lately, the preference for drug testing methodologies has shifted towards hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now often favor a hair drug test over a standard urine analysis. Hair follicle testing is implemented by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to its extended detection timeline, typically up to 90 days, and because it is conducted under supervision, making it virtually foolproof. However, for detection within the past 5 days, a urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and other substances by trapping biomarkers within the fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to about 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four major processes in the laboratory handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This comprises verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to potentially dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive outcome must be verified to meet court standards. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further verification.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging procedure.

Verification of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to verification as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter periods.
  • Difficulty to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical insight: It delivers an overview of drug use over lengthier periods, instead of just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become discernible in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair shade and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
