Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in King Lake, Nebraska. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities across all major cities that can conduct hair tests. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is generally required. Results can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom test options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been used for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests support employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation, offering a longer detection period of about 90 days, conducted in an observed manner, making it nearly cheat-proof. However, for screenings covering the previous 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended account of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair may provide a detection period lasting up to roughly 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch lock comprising approximately 200 hair fibers (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for both preliminary screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150 mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair might be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a specimen into the laboratory framework. This process ensures that the specimen is correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any additional data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid test for illicit substances. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient approach to eliminate samples from drug misuse suspicion, a positive outcome should be validated for legal acceptance. Samples testing positive in the Screening require further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result from the Screening, additional hair is obtained from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from the hair at lower concentrations than in alternative methods (i.e., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug testing.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Each presumptive positive sample undergoes cleansing before confirmation, when necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes audits according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug uptake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a limited detection range.
  • Low susceptibility to falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical consumption: It reveals patterns of drug consumption across an extended timeline, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Detecting drugs in hair requires roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug testing strategies.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
