Located in Silver City, Nevada, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. With a specialization in hair tests for drugs or alcohol, we boast nationwide centers equipped to carry out these procedures. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required on the head or body, facilitating testing for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored analyses.

The shift towards hair follicle drug testing has gained momentum among employers and legal authorities as it surpasses the traditional urine test. Organizations enforcing strict no-drug-use policies, judicial systems, and probation officers now lean towards hair tests. The key advantage? A detection window extending up to 90 days, collected under observation, and challenging to alter. For recent usage detection, however, urine tests remain superior for up to 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged historical view of alcohol and drug intake, as hair locks in biomarkers within the fibers as it grows. When collected from near the scalp, hair can detect alcohol and drugs for a period extending up to roughly 90 days. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests involving more than 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results involves these four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. It entails verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and filling in additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial cursory examination for drugs of abuse. While it's an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be validated to hold up in court. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is taken from the existing specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered quite challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all samples that are presumptively positive are washed as necessary. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use for as much as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Furnishes usage history: It can reveal a trajectory of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Silver City, NV, finds hair follicle testing as the superior choice over urine testing for drug detection. Unmatched in sensitivity, hair tests offer a larger detection scope, identifying drug use that dates back much further. This makes it highly effective for organizations aiming to maintain their drug-free environment, facilitating thorough scrutiny unmatched by traditional methods.

Urine tests may capture recent use, but for extended detection periods, hair follicle tests enable employers in Silver City an insightful view, reflecting long-term drug use patterns. This advantage equips businesses with a thorough and reliable foundation for decision-making.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing, practiced in Silver City, NV, offers a comprehensive view of drug use up to nearly 90 days. Unlike other tests, which only detect immediate use, hair tests provide a complete history, ensuring that employers get a solid understanding of substance use habits over time, offering a big-picture view of an individual's lifestyle.

Employers benefit greatly from this extended window, allowing them to make informed decisions about potential and current employees. Hair follicle testing’s capability to trace substances long after usage is invaluable in guaranteeing a drug-free workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Silver City, NV, significantly minimize the likelihood of sample adulteration. This testing method is designed to be tamper-resistant, guaranteeing the integrity of the samples and providing results that are unquestionable and reliable. Unlike urine samples, hair samples are harder to alter, thus increasing the credibility of the test outcomes.

The assurance provided by the stringent hair follicle testing method instills confidence for employers and legal entities. With the ability to thwart tampering attempts, organizations can rely on these tests for accurate and genuine results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
