Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bow, New Hampshire. If requiring a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we provide this service across all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Nowadays drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing supports employers with zero-tolerance policies, is mandated by courts, and used for probation. The key advantage is the extended 90-day drug detection duration, with an observed collection process, making it hard to tamper with. Urine tests still excel in identifying very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or instances involving more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be obtained. In discussions about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, providing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any additional data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to bypass: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, which enhances the result's reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: This method can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There is about a 5-7 day delay before drugs are identifiable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Even though they are frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
