Complete hair follicle drug testing services are provided by Accredited Drug Testing in Barnegat, New Jersey. Specializing in hair-based drug or alcohol tests, we have nationwide testing sites capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing needs.

There has been an increasing trend towards using hair follicle drug tests for detecting substance use. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts often favor this method over traditional urine analysis. It benefits policies that demand total abstinence and provides a longer detection window—around 90 days—while being nearly impossible to deceive. However, for detecting recent use within five days, a urine test is still preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record over time for alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibrous matrix during its growth. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use up to roughly a 3-month period. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to falsify, and simple to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, incorporating a sample into the laboratory system. This step includes checking that the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening can cost-effectively dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that exhibit a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at much reduced concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are methods used to verify any positive screening outcomes. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and meets the accreditation for ISO / IEC 17025 principles.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine assessments that have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage history: Offers an account of drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Differences in hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is done on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass urine testing in Barnegat, NJ? Hair testing boasts a superior detection accuracy, making it more reliable for long-term substance use analysis. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests trace usage up to 90 days. This extended window ensures a broader understanding of a person's substance habits, enhancing decision-making for employers and legal professionals.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing in Barnegat, NJ, is a significant advantage. Capable of revealing drug use over the past 90 days, hair tests provide employers a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history. This longitudinal insight is beneficial for pre-employment screenings and ongoing employee evaluations, allowing for a more thorough assessment of drug use patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Barnegat, NJ, is known for being a tamper-resistant testing method. Its design reduces the risk of sample adulteration significantly, providing dependable and unchallengeable results. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are less prone to manipulation, ensuring the credibility of the outcomes and bolstering the test's integrity for legal and professional applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
