Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Brookdale, NJ. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers nationwide, including all major cities, can conduct hair analyses. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

More often, drug testing now includes hair follicle analysis. It's preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts for its zero-tolerance accuracy. With a longer detection window of up to 90 days and resistance to tampering, it’s ideal for non-recent use. Yet, for recent use within five days, traditional urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent means for identifying alcohol and drug intake. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and substance usage by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If head hair is scarce, a comparable volume of body hair can substitute. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The quartet of fundamental stages in laboratory handling of a drug test outcome encompasses Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory processing of a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies the sample's sealing and shipping accuracy, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and enters any supplementary data absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening executes an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While it efficiently eliminates drug use on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), attesting to hair testing's complexity as a screening method.

Confirmation of positives from Screening uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo a cleansing pre-confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug analysis identifies drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter windows.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating is tough with hair drug tests, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a usage pattern over time, not just recent behavior.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drug presence is noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing usually incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often dubbed "hair follicle tests," the analysis primarily inspects the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Discover the benefits of hair testing over traditional urine tests in Brookdale, NJ. Hair follicle tests offer superior detection accuracy, capable of identifying drug usage within longer timelines. In comparison to urine tests, hair testing not only provides more detailed results but also offers a durable analysis not susceptible to common cheating techniques.

When reliability is paramount, hair testing outperforms traditional methods. It accurately unveils historical substance use, giving more confidence in test outcomes. Ideal for workplaces needing rigorous testing, it's the preferred choice for those who require thorough screenings.

Extended Detection Window

With a detection window stretching up to 90 days, hair follicle tests provide an extensive view of substance use history for Brookdale, NJ employers. Unlike shorter-term tests, this method reveals drug usage from far back, not just recent activity. It's invaluable for employers who need to understand long-term substance habits.

As a preferred choice for comprehensive screenings, hair testing ensures that employers in Brookdale know the full spectrum of an employee's drug use history. This extended period is crucial for maintaining workplace safety and making informed hiring decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
