Process Overview

The key phases in the testing process include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about entering a sample into a lab’s system. This entails verifying that it was sealed and sent properly, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry not available via electronic custodial systems.

Screening conducts a preliminary examination for substance misuse. Although it is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive screens require a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening shows a presumptive positive result, more hair is extracted from the original batch for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at lower levels than in methods like urine tests, making hair testing the hardest to perform.

Positives are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before Confirmation. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 credentials.
