Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis services within Cedar Glen Lakes, NJ. If hair drug or alcohol assessment is necessary, our expertise in hair examinations with nationwide testing facilities ensures thorough assessments. Generally, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, and these tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are now favoring hair drug testing over traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle tests benefit employers with strict drug prohibitions, judicial systems, and probationary individuals, offering extended detection up to 90 days with a secure and tamper-proof collection process. Despite this, urine tests remain most accurate for drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. If gathered near the scalp, hair can provide up to about a 3-month detection timeline for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, an equal amount of body hair can be obtained. In this context, head hair denotes only scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other hair types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substance misuse. Even though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most cases, a confirmed positive result is necessary to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than seen in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid testing), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, while urine tests have a shorter testable range.
  • High difficulty to manipulate: Given its nature, altering hair drug test results is highly challenging, making outcomes more credible.
  • Historic usage data: It reveals trends in drug consumption over time, rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur more costs than other screening methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine testing in Cedar Glen Lakes, NJ? The answer lies in superior detection accuracy and heightened reliability. Hair testing demonstrates a broader detection window than traditional urine tests—ensuring higher accountability and reducing the chances of evasion by test takers.

Employers gain insight into up to 90 days of a person’s substance history, crucial for assessing ongoing drug habits. Such a comprehensive timeline helps companies evaluate applicants or employees with clarity and detail usually unavailable with shorter-duration tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
