Accredited Drug Testing brings comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services to Clayton, NJ. For individuals requiring hair-based tests for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in precise hair testing. Our extensive network of testing centers spans cities across the nation, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your crown or body suffice. These tests can evaluate drug consumption, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other hair testing needs.

In recent times, the approach toward drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors prefer these over standard urine tests. Hair drug tests are invaluable for zero-tolerance organizations, courts, and those on probation. The key benefit of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, collected through an observer-supervised process, making it tough to manipulate. Nonetheless, for drug use screening within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use by preserving biomarkers within the strands. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to about 3 months for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, tricky to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of roughly 200 strands (around the girth of a #2 pencil) from the area closest to the scalp equates to 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It’s suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. In the context of head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair signifies all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing for drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab's systems. This process entails ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for substance misuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient technique to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive status in Screening necessitate further verification.

In instances of a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This phase extracts drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used for the Confirmation of positive screening results. Presumptive positive specimens undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards along with the accreditation in ISO / IEC 17025.

Merits of hair drug analysis:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug usage up to 90 days prior, opposed to urine tests which have a reduced detection frame.
  • Complication in deception: Hair drug analyses are challenging to manipulate, providing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: This method shows a pattern of drug consumption over time, unlike just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair hue and personal hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Clayton, NJ

Hair follicle testing offers greater accuracy in identifying long-term drug use, surpassing the limitations of urine tests, which typically reveal recent consumption only. Employers in Clayton, NJ, benefit from more insightful data, aiding in making well-informed hiring and staffing decisions compared to traditional methods.

Opting for hair testing allows a retrospective analysis of substance use over an extended duration, offering a clearer substance history that urine testing can't match. This superior detection capability empowers employers with enhanced reliability in screening processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
