Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Dorothy, New Jersey. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis, with facilities in every city across the nation equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing requirements.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle testing. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases. Their main advantage is a much longer window of detection, up to 90 days, using an observed process, making it almost foolproof. However, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands, providing a prolonged history of substance use. When collected near the scalp, it offers up to a roughly 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four major stages in the lab processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial expedient check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with presumed positive results in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

For samples presumed positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to carry out.

Any positive Screening result undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, providing greater accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It demonstrates a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair in roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors including hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
