Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Edgewater Park, New Jersey. Whether you require a drug or alcohol analysis via hair, Accredited Drug Testing has centers nationwide specializing in this method, capable of performing hair assessments. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for this test. The hair can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair analysis options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. More businesses, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair evaluations over standard urine ones. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with strict drug use policies, judicial requirements, and probation scenarios. A primary advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, with a monitored collection procedure, making it difficult to tamper. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair encapsulates a comprehensive record of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the growing hair strand. Collected from near the scalp, hair can offer up to an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent body hair quantity can be used. Head hair strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing at the laboratory involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing into the lab’s system, including confirming proper sample sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry if an electronic chain of custody system doesn’t provide it.

Screening is a preliminary fast check for drug abuse. While cost-effective to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening need a secondary examination.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive during the Screening process, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Any positive Screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleaned prior to necessary confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can indicate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There’s typically a 5-7 day period before drugs can be detected in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
