Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fort Dix, New Jersey. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we have specialty in hair testing and offer our services through centers located nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body will suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included the hair follicle test. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are asking for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers. Their major advantage is a prolonged detection window, usually up to 90 days, collected under supervision and hard to falsify. Although, for drug use within recent 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is acknowledged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair create an extended timeline for substances, capturing biomarkers as they grow. Positioned near the scalp, these strands can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a span of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's relatively tamper-proof, and it's convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp produces 100mg, which is ideal for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or over 10 panel tests, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's beneficial to weigh the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, body hair can be used instead. "Head hair" denotes only scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing comprises four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step involves checking that the sample's seal and shipment were correct, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substances. Though a budget-friendly means to dismiss drug usage in most cases, a positive screening requires confirmation to be court-eligible. Samples with potential positives from Screening need further verification.

In cases of a positive indication in Screening, a portion of the primary sample is utilized for Extraction. Here, substances are separated from hair at concentrations much lower than those detected in alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing a highly challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screenings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. Every step, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is meticulously reviewed following both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, much longer than urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating the hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: Offers insight into a longer-term drug usage trend rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify immediate use: Drugs require between 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and growth rate can affect metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", they examine the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
