Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Gibbstown, New Jersey. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. With testing facilities across all cities nationwide, we are equipped to perform your required test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair test options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. This testing method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies and is applicable in legal or probationary contexts. The main advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days. It's collected under observation, making it hard to tamper with. Yet, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine analysis remains the accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for a period of up to 3 months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to 100mg, the optimal quantity for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to verify the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially integrated into a laboratory’s system. This phase includes affirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary scan for drug substances. While cost-efficient for eliminating drug presence in most instances, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples yielding presumptive positives during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

For samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the originating sample for the Extraction phase. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other testing methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives are washed as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is rigorously reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and holds accreditation to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which detect usage over shorter timelines.
  • Resistance to tampering: The difficulty in altering hair drug test results enhances their accuracy.
  • Traceable historical usage: These tests can chart drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
