Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Golden Triangle, NJ. Whether you require drug or alcohol testing via hair, our expertise is in hair testing, with centers across all U.S. cities ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for sampling. Hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

In recent times, drug testing procedures have increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over conventional urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, or people under probation increasingly opt for hair follicle testing due to its ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, making evasion nearly impossible. However, to identify recent usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. Collecting hair near the scalp allows for an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional panels, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, we mean specifically scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for obtaining a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial system entry of a sample into a lab's database. This phase verifies correct sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any leftover data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening involves a preliminary swift detection check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to negate drug consumption in most cases, a positive screening requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples suspected of being positive in Screening need additional verification.

For samples that are suspected of being positive during the Screening phase, more hair is selected from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at notably reduced levels compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All screening-positive samples are cleansed before verification if required. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's extremely challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a timeline of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It generally takes between 5-7 days before substances become detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug screening techniques.
  • Variability in outcome: Elements like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
