In Kearny, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Need a hair drug or alcohol test? They specialize in this area, with test centers across all cities nationwide to perform hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly involve hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over urine tests. These hair tests are vital for employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. A major benefit is the extended 90-day detection period, with an observed collection process, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Viewed as a significant resource, hair testing is advantageous for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Through embedding biomarkers in the developing hair fibers, hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and substance usage over an extended period. When gathered near the scalp, hair can detect alcohol and drugs within a roughly 3-month timeframe. Hair is effortless to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It’s suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a corresponding amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the lab encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial induction of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid analysis for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be deemed acceptable in legal situations. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample display presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower intensity compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any affirmative Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite difficult, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Costly: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In the debate between hair follicle tests and urine tests, hair testing in Kearny, NJ, consistently emerges as superior. It offers higher accuracy and a longer detection window, making it the preferred choice for employers and legal institutions. Hair testing is much harder to circumvent, providing reliable results when drug-free compliance is critical.

Hair follicle testing offers a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug use history, capturing data that urine tests often miss. This enhanced detection period—up to 90 days—provides peace of mind to employers concerned about workplace safety and policy adherence. The reliability of hair tests makes them a preferred choice when detecting substance use over time.

Extended Detection Window

One standout advantage of hair follicle testing in Kearny, NJ, is its extensive detection window. Capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, it gives employers a broader view of an individual's substance use. This long-range detection is particularly beneficial for assessing candidates during the hiring process.

The 90-day detection capability of hair tests allows employers to make informed decisions about prospective employees. By revealing a comprehensive history of drug use, hair follicle tests help maintain a safe, compliant workplace. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
