Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right in Lafayette, New Jersey. If a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities in numerous cities nationwide that carry out hair testing. You would need around 1.5 to 2 inches of hair at the crown of your head, though body hair might also be used. Hair tests are capable of screening for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer diverse customized testing solutions.

Lately, the trend in drug testing has leaned heavily towards hair follicle testing. It's becoming common practice for employers, courts, and addiction specialists to request hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are chosen for their extensive detection range, favored by employers with rigorous anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation requirements. A key advantage is the longer detection window—up to 90 days—captured in a monitored collection that is practically foolproof. Nevertheless, for detecting drugs used within the past five days, urine tests still maintain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as a significant method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fiber of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal specimen for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, roughly the same amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key four steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This step involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial swift check for abuse drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug usage on most samples, any positive screens require confirmation to be acceptable in court. Samples that appear positive in Screening indeed require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample turns presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging methodology to carry out.

The confirmation of any positive screen result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample is washed before confirmation if necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug screenings can spot drug usage for as much as 90 days in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to fake: It is extremely challenging to fake a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Reveals historical trends: It can display a pattern of drug utilization over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Fails to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are usually more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although occasionally referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outperform traditional urine tests in Lafayette, NJ? It offers greater detection accuracy and reliability, making it a superior choice. Hair tests bring out more comprehensive results by identifying substances over a prolonged period.

This means employers can better assess an individual's drug use history, going beyond what urine tests provide, making hair tests a wise, informed decision.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests in Lafayette, NJ, is unmatched. These tests can trace drug use back up to 90 days, giving employers the advantage of a panoramic view of an employee’s substance usage history.

This longer detection period allows for an informed assessment and decision-making process, preventing recent abstinence from masking long-term habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
