Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Marlboro, New Jersey. Whether you're in need of alcohol or drug analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and provides this service through our centers located Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Tests can evaluate the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other tailored hair examination services.

Lately, drug testing practices have increasingly favored hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts now demand hair assessments rather than the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle evaluations appeal to those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, including judges and probationary individuals. Their primary advantage is a prolonged detection window, covering up to 90 days, utilizing a supervised collection method, making it nearly unfalsifiable. Meanwhile, urine tests continue to prove highly precise for recent drug use—within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the threads of developing hair strands. When taken near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal a detection range of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil size) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, supplementary tests, or tests beyond ten panels, a 150mg sample is essential. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested to verify the specimen's weight. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equal quantity of body hair may be taken instead. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four pivotal stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome, namely Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accommodating any missing data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts a preliminary and quick evaluation for substance abuse. While it's a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screening must be validated to stand in legal proceedings. Any samples flagged as presumably positive during Screening necessitate further verification.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving substances from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug assessments are among the most challenging to execute.

Any positive findings from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked as presumptive positive receive washing before Confirmation when needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug evaluations can identify substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which feature a shorter detection span.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug checks are challenging to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: This method reveals drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally cost more than alternative testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
