Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Marshalltown, New Jersey. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing with centers available across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or with other tailored options.

In recent developments, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer this over traditional urine tests due to its benefits. This method supports zero-tolerance policies, needed by courts and probation systems. Its primary advantage is a 90-day detection window, collected under supervision, making evasion nearly impossible, though for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective tool for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can show a detection window extending up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for evaluation and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When referring to head hair, it pertains to scalp hair only. Body hair covers all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integrating of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to identify drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal contexts. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to carry out.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed with adherence to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Marshalltown, NJ, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing methods by providing enhanced detection accuracy and reliability over longer periods. Unlike the urine test, which captures short-term drug use, hair testing offers a fuller picture of usage history, making it the preferred choice for many entities concerned with substance screening.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Marshalltown, NJ impressively detects drug use for up to 90 days, offering employers a thorough insight into an individual's substance history. This extended detection window is invaluable for employers aiming to maintain a reliable workforce, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of an applicant or current employee’s drug activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
