Accredited Drug Testing offers full hair follicle drug tests in Metuchen, New Jersey. Specializing in hair testing for drugs or alcohol, we operate centers nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more common in recent years as a method for drug testing. Increasingly, employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance policies and courts supervising probation. The main advantage is the longer detection window, up to 90 days, which is both observed and resistant to cheating. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive historical record of substance use by trapping biomarkers within the strands during hair growth. When harvested close to the scalp, hair samples can reveal a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch lock of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields approximately 100mg of hair, which is the most suitable amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to collect 150mg of hair. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In instances where scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When referring to head hair, we imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves incorporating a sample into a lab system initially. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and transportation, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody doesn't cover.

Screening entails a preliminary quick inspection for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples presumed positive in Screening, further hair is removed from the sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair in concentrations far less than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most complex method to execute.

Confirming any positive Screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Hard to deceive: It's quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can exhibit a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of revealing recent use: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variations can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
