Accredited Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing services in Mount Hope, New Jersey. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with centers available nationwide for conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for the test, capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prominent method for drug screening. This is preferred to standard urine tests by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Hair follicle tests are chosen by entities enforcing strict no-drug policies, offering a detection window up to 90 days. This procedure is observed, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair strands capture long-term biomarkers within their fibers, providing an extensive history of alcohol and drug use. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can reflect alcohol and drug use over an approximate three-month period. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp constitutes 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is beneficial to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result entails four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system for initial processing. This step confirms that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. All samples with presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positive results in Screening, further hair is taken from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. This phase extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Reliable results: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a drug use pattern over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Mount Hope, NJ
Hair testing offers extended detection that surpasses traditional urine tests in numerous ways. Its superior accuracy provides a detailed understanding of an individual’s substance use history. While urine tests might only detect recent use, hair tests can identify drug presence over a prolonged period, thus offering a comprehensive view of substance consumption.

The reliability of hair follicle testing lies in its intricate testing process, which is less susceptible to tampering or accidental contamination compared to urine tests. This makes it a preferred choice for ensuring a transparent and thorough drug screening, helping employers enforce their zero-tolerance policies effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
