Process Overview

The process for laboratory analysis of drug test results comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any auxiliary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for substance abuse. While Screening cost-efficiently rules out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be substantiated for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
