Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Port Reading, New Jersey. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing brings expertise in hair testing, available through our nationwide centers located in every city. Generally, a sample requires a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly favored for substance screening in recent years. Many organizations, judiciaries, and substance abuse specialists necessitate hair testing over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle analyses serve employers enforcing stringent anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The prominent advantage is a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed sample collection making it virtually tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain most precise for detecting drug use in the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a chronological record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month history of alcohol and drug exposure. The collection process is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipment.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale is advisable to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair is an alternative. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test incorporates four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a specimen into a lab’s system, ensuring it was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finishing any extra data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug use. Despite being economical for eliminating drug usage in the bulk of samples, a positive Screen needs confirmation for court acceptance. Presumptively positive Screening results necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

For presumptive positive results during Screening, further hair is taken from the sample for the Extraction process. This involves extracting drugs from hair at far lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Any positive Screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and validated by ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter period of urine tests.
  • Hard to fake: The difficulty in tampering with hair drug tests enhances result reliability.
  • Tracks historical usage: It illustrates a drug usage pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs only become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier than other methods.
  • Result variations: Influences like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Port Reading, NJ, the benefits of hair testing surpass those of urine tests significantly. Hair follicle tests offer superior detection accuracy, capable of identifying drug usage over 90 days, compared to the brief window of urine tests. This method enhances reliability, offering employers greater insight into an individual’s substance use patterns over time.

The superior detection capabilities of hair tests provide an edge over traditional urine tests, giving employers confidence in their screening processes. The extended detection window ensures a comprehensive review of an individual's drug history, unmatched by urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

In Port Reading, NJ, hair follicle testing's extended detection window is a significant advantage, capturing a 90-day substance use history. This extended period helps employers assess an applicant's or employee's complete drug use record, providing a clearer picture of their habits over time.

The longer detection period of hair follicle tests offers an important tool for employers interested in understanding an individual's long-term drug use patterns. This comprehensive approach is invaluable for maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
