Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rudeville, New Jersey. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis. With testing facilities across Nationwide cities, a hair test can be executed seamlessly. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Over recent years, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug testing is favored by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probationary individuals. Its key advantage lies in detecting drug use over an extended period—up to 90 days—through an observed collection process, enhancing its resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting recent drug usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair documents a lengthy history of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can supply roughly a three-month detection period for substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, supplemental, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not reachable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The four primary phases in the lab process for analyzing a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial integration into a lab’s database, which includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. It is an economical means to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples; however, a positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening demand further verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is subtracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate approach.

Verification of any positive screening results occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before verification as necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Verification is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical usage: It provides a record of drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Detectability of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Outperforms Urine Tests in Rudeville, NJ

For those debating the merits of drug testing methods, hair follicle testing offers clear advantages over traditional urine tests. Hair testing boasts superior detection capabilities and a more extended drug use history review. Its resistance to tampering further enhances its reliability and accuracy.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests do not need recent use to detect substances. This broader detection window means employers gain a more comprehensive insight into substance habits over the past three months.

Extended Detection Window

Comprehensive Detection Period in Rudeville, NJ

Hair follicle testing covers a much lengthier detection period, up to 90 days, compared to other drug tests. This extensive window provides a complete overview, allowing employers to assess substance use habits over time, ensuring a drug-free work environment and informed hiring decisions.

A significant advantage of hair testing is its capability to trace and report on drug use over an extended period, offering insights that illuminate long-term patterns of behavior rather than isolated incidents.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
