Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Salem, New Jersey. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol screenings, our expertise lies in hair tests and we boast testing locations in cities across the nation, ready to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. These tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and myriad custom options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a favored method for drug screening in recent times. This is due to the growing demand from employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse specialists who opt for hair tests over the conventional urine samples. Firms with strict drug policies, court orders, or probation cases prefer these tests. They offer an extended detection window, up to 90 days, are collected under observation, making them hard to deceive. However, when detecting recent drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests are unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended historical view of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs for up to roughly three months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, with about 200 strands of hair (roughly equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) from nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is suitable for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is ideal. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's system. This process ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any extra data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening efficiently eliminates drug use in most samples cost-effectively, a positive screen must be validated to be legally admissible. Samples yielding a presumptive positive outcome in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is acknowledged as the most complex method to execute.

Validation of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before any required confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a cleansing process. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to cheat: Altering hair drug test outcomes is highly challenging, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage data: It provides a record of drug use over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing formats.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle within the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In the realm of substance detection in Salem, NJ, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests. The primary advantage is its superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a long detection timeline, tracing back drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests are limited to shorter windows.

Moreover, hair follicle tests offer greater reliability. They are nearly impossible to manipulate or cheat, ensuring that the results reflect true substance use history. This feature makes hair tests particularly appealing to employers looking for rigorous pre-employment screening methods.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Salem, NJ, presents a distinct advantage with its extended detection window. It allows for the identification of drug use over a period of up to 90 days. This broad timeframe provides employers with a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history.

For employers seeking to understand the long-term habits of potential hires or current employees, this long view is invaluable. It helps them make more informed decisions, ensuring a safer and more reliable work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the standout benefits of hair follicle testing in Salem, NJ is its tamper-resistant nature. The testing method significantly diminishes the risk of sample tampering, offering results that are reliable and beyond reproach.

This test's tamper-evident qualities are thanks to its reliance on the physical hair sample, which retains drug traces even after washing. Thus, it provides a more defensible result than urine tests, which can be easily manipulated.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
