Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Somerville, New Jersey. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities located nationwide. Most people require 1.5 to 2 inches of head hair or body hair for analysis. Hair screenings can assess drug, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug screenings have gained popularity as a testing method. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair screenings over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation choose this method due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days and its secure, chaperoned collection process, which reduces cheating. However, for detecting recent use within five days, urine screenings remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective approach for detecting substance use. Hair retains a lengthy history of drug and alcohol exposure by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal substance utilization for up to about a three-month span. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, enhancements, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent mass of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential stages involved in laboratory processing for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into a laboratory’s database. This includes confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug presence in most samples, any positive screen must undergo verification to be court-admissible. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate follow-up confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at weaker concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, versus urine tests which offer a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug examination is exceptionally difficult, bolstering result accuracy.
  • Tracks past trends: It offers a record of drug habits over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection delay: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Somerville, NJ, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing with its extended detection capabilities and accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which can be prone to tampering, hair tests offer a reliable alternative with a longer detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days. This makes hair testing ideal for workplaces enforcing strict drug-free policies.

Employers value hair testing over traditional methods due to its reliability and comprehensive detection period. While urine tests serve their purpose, the superior accuracy and tamper-resistant nature of hair testing makes it a preferred choice in a zero-tolerance environment.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
