Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Monticello, New Mexico. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair evaluations, with testing facilities across all cities Nationwide for hair testing. You need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair in most scenarios. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other hair testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts demand hair drug screenings rather than standard urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation. A chief advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it nearly invulnerable to tampering. Yet, for examining recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. By capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair, it provides a prolonged history of substance use. Collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) collected closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirming. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. It is advised to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, the same quantity of body hair can be taken. Scalp hair refers to head hair only, while body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The labs process a test result in four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system, verifying proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any further data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a rapid preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Though economical for ruling out drug use in many samples, a positive screen needs confirming to be legally valid. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

When Screening suggests possible positivity, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This process delves drugs from hair at a concentration far lower than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: A hair drug test is difficult to fake, leading to more reliable results.
  • Shows usage patterns: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time rather than recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal immediate usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
