Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug exams in San Antonio, New Mexico. When hair drug or alcohol testing is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with testing centers established across all cities nationwide to administer hair tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or from the body is sufficient. These tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug examinations are implemented by employers enforcing stringent anti-drug use policies, courts, and individuals on probation. A major advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection window for substance consumption, usually up to 90 days, conducted under observation and challenging to falsify. Nonetheless, for identifying substance use in the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into an essential method for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a prolonged record of exposure by capturing biomarkers within its growing fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month history of drug and alcohol use. This method is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch length containing around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) closest to the scalp results in approximately 100mg of hair, which is perfect for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, or panels exceeding 10, it's suggested to acquire 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is advisable. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. The term "head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any additional information not entered through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs. While it offers a cost-efficient method for excluding substance usage in most samples, any positive findings must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, substances are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening the most complex procedure.

Confirmation of positive results utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Provides a pattern of substance use over a duration, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Insufficient for recent usage detection: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," it's the hair strand that is analyzed, not the follicle itself underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
