Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle substance assessments in Albertson, New York. Our expertise in hair testing means we can facilitate these tests nationwide, including all metropolitan areas. Typically, hair samples of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body are adequate. Hair assessments can reveal alcohol/ETG and other custom test possibilities.

In recent times, drug screening has increasingly employed hair follicle tests. This method is now favored by employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. These tests, favored by entities with strict drug policies, provide an extensive detection period of up to 90 days, are observed during collection, and are almost impossible to manipulate. For drug use detected within the past five days, however, urine tests maintain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a detailed history of substances like alcohol by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair provides up to a three-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an ideal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It's advised to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be used. When discussing head hair, the reference is solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental steps in the laboratory process for producing a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and integrates any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid initial analysis for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage across most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that indicate positive in Screening necessitate a confirming procedure.

If the Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening particularly complex.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The complete procedures from Accessioning to Confirmation adhere to the standards set by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which possess a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers chronological data: It provides a timeline of drug utilization over an extended duration, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis primarily examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Albertson, NY, hair follicle testing stands out compared to traditional urine tests. The superior detection capabilities of hair testing ensure more consistent and accurate results. Unlike urine tests, which often only detect recent usage, hair tests offer a far-reaching scope of analysis, making them a preferred choice for many.

The ability to provide reliable and long-term insights into substance use sets hair testing apart. It's this reliability that makes it a favorable choice for employers and institutions concerned with comprehensive drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Albertson, NY surpasses that of conventional methods, offering up to a 90-day history of drug use. This feature provides employers with a thorough profile of a candidate's substance use behavior, aiding in making informed hiring decisions.

Unlike other testing methods, hair follicle tests cover an extended period, exposing patterns and behaviors that might otherwise go undetected. This comprehensive coverage plays a significant role in comprehensive screening processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests conducted in Albertson, NY provide an effective deterrent against sample tampering. The nature of hair testing makes it significantly challenging to adulterate or defeat the sample, ensuring the results obtained are trustworthy and dependable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
