In Bergholtz, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair-based test for drugs or alcohol is required, our specialty in hair sampling is supported by nationwide centers capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are necessary. Hair samples can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored testing choices.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become increasingly common for drug testing in recent years. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for them over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict drug policies, judicial entities, and individuals on probation because it detects drug use over a longer period, up to 90 days. The collection method is observed and difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more effective for recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations stand as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand’s fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hairs (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100 mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150 mg specimen is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When referring to head hair, it denotes scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal steps in the laboratory examination of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for drugs of misuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a screen that is positive must be verified to be permissible in court. Any samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), indicating why hair drug screening is the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can find drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine assessments which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to meddle with a hair drug test, thus the results are more precise.
  • Yields historical insights: It can show a sequence of drug use over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
