Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Boston, New York. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our specialization in hair testing ensures that our nationwide centers can conduct your test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body is necessary. Hair tests are capable of identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method in recent years. Many employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer a hair test over the traditional urine test. These tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies on drug use, courts, and for individuals on probation. A key advantage is the extended detection window, often up to 90 days, collected in a supervised process, making it challenging to falsify results. However, for screening recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective instrument, hair testing is utilized for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a lengthy record of drug activity by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month timeline for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is easy, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping simplicity is a plus.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (roughly mirroring the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation processes. For tests like EtG additions and/or those beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's recommended to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not accessible, the same quantity of body hair may be obtained. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The first step, Accessioning, involves integrating the sample into the lab’s system. This encompasses checking that it was correctly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any lacking data entry that isn’t captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is the initial evaluation for drugs of abuse. While this step is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive identifications must undergo further confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate subsequent validation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drug substances are drawn from hair at considerably lower levels compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the toughest method to conduct.

Confirmation follows any positive screen using protocols like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples identified as positive are washed before confirmation, as needed. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to reviews under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification along with ISO/IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing uncovers drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter span of urine testing.
  • Hard to manipulate: Avoiding deception in hair drug testing is notably tough, promising higher result precision.
  • Reveals historical use: It delivers a timeline of drug use, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest within the hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs greater costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Result fluctuation: Influences like hair color and personal growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels.

Note: Despite common reference to "hair follicle tests", the actual examination pertains to the hair strand, excluding the scalp follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing distinctly outperforms urine tests in detecting substance use over more extended periods in Boston, NY.

  • The longer detection window signifies superior accuracy in identifying ongoing drug use.
  • It lessens the chance of manipulation, as hair tests are harder to deceive than standard urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing, up to 90 days, offers a comprehensive substance history analysis in Boston, NY.

  • This method surpasses the limited timeframe of urine tests, allowing employers an expansive view of potential employees' habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Boston, NY significantly reduces the risk of sample tampering. Providing reliable results, this test is a favored option for accuracy and integrity.

Unlike urine tests, which can be easily adulterated, hair testing offers an inherent resistance to manipulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
