In Central Bridge, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair analysis and have testing facilities nationwide to conduct the tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now often favor this over the traditional urine test. These tests support zero-tolerance policies, probation requirements, and other legal stipulations. The key advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, performed under observation, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected close to the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting it is straightforward, it's challenging to tamper with, and it's simple to send.

A hair specimen, 1.5 inches long and about 200 strands thick (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, the equivalent amount from body hair can be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory’s system. It encompasses ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves conducting an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require secondary verification.

If a sample is considered presumptively positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at substantially lower concentrations than with alternative methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under both the CAP Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical drug use data: Hair tests provide a timeline of drug use patterns, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
