In Eden, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair assessments, accessible in testing centers across every city nationwide, proficient in performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent in drug testing methodologies. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over the conventional urine analysis. Employers with stringent no-drug use standards, courts, and probationers commonly utilize hair follicle tests. The main advantage is a significantly prolonged detection timeline, up to 90 days, carried out via observed collection, making it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use within the past five days, the urine test remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Within the realm of drug and alcohol detection, hair testing has emerged as a potent means for identifying use. The composition of hair allows it to archive a prolonged history of substances by encasing biomarkers along the hair shaft as it grows. A segment cut near the scalp can yield a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and distinct drugs. The collection process for hair is uncomplicated, with a moderate resistance to tampering, and facilitates easy mailing.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirming. For applications involving EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is prudent to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In scenarios where scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent measure of body hair can be used. Notably, ‘head hair’ pertains exclusively to scalp hair. In contrast, ‘body hair’ encompasses types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The sequence of steps integral to processing a drug test result in the lab consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample in a lab’s system. This entails confirming that the sample is appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fulfilling any extra data inputs absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening denotes an initial, swift assessment for substances of abuse. Screening, though cost-efficient and capable of excluding drug use for most samples, requires positive screens to undergo confirmation for judicial admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

In instances where a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair from the initial batch is used for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are separated from hair concentrated much less dense than techniques such as urine or oral fluid analysis, rendering hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening results uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire lab process undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests permit the disclosure of drug use up to 90 days prior, surpassing the temporally limited urine tests.
  • Difficult to tamper with: The challenge in manipulating a hair drug test heightens the accuracy of its results.
  • Chronicles past activity: It unveils a timeline of drug consumption over time, not merely recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent activity: It requires about 5-7 days post-use for medications to appear in the hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests bear higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair pigmentation and individual discrepancies in hair growth may impact the level of drug metabolites visible in the hair.

Note: Despite frequently being termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the scalp’s underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
