Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Endwell, New York. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, with facilities across the nation ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body, is necessary. Our tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug testing procedures. This method is increasingly favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, shifting from the conventional urine test. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers find hair tests invaluable. Its main advantage lies in detecting drug use for up to 90 days, performed under supervision and difficult to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair strand analysis has emerged as an influential means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term indicators of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair specimens offer nearly a 90-day detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and it is also easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hairs (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's recommended to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps of drug test analysis in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab system. This involves confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although cost-effective, screening alone cannot justify in a legal setting without confirmation. Samples that test presumptively positive during screening need additional confirmation.

When a sample is flagged as presumptively positive in the Screening stage, further portions of the sample are utilized for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than seen with other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), marking hair drug analysis as one of the more challenging techniques.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples are cleaned if needed before confirmation. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 protocols.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine testing which detects recent use.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are inherently resistant to manipulation, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: This test reveals patterns of drug usage over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
