Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Esopus, New York. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these tests, with facilities available in every city across the nation that can administer a hair test. You must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head or body, typically utilized. Hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing selections.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has grown recently for drug test protocols. It's increasingly required by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation often leverage hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage is the extended detection timeframe for drug use, reaching up to 90 days, which involves an observed collection process and is nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG and additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is recommended. It is advisable to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, the reference is to scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as an initial quick test for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-effective way to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed before it is admissible in court. Any sample that tests presumptively positive during Screening requires further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entirety of the laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Resistant to tampering: It is extremely challenging to fabricate hair drug test outcomes, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug use over a longer period, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests" being common, the actual test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
