Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Madison, New York. If your need includes a hair-based drug or alcohol screen, we specialize in it, with testing centers across all cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. To proceed, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of head hair, although body hair can also be used. Such tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a method for substance screening. A growing number of employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is often implemented by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and for individuals on probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to adulterate. However, for screening drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent instrument for unveiling drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-standing record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fiber of the developing hair strand. When procured near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to dispatch.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or anything beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent portion of body hair can be extracted. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result undergoes four principal stages in the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This stage ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system may not have provided.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though screening offers a budget-friendly method to discard drug usage in the majority of samples, a confirmed positive reading is necessary for court submission. Samples that test presumptively positive at this stage will need further confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid); hence, hair drug screening entails the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive test outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes examination under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can disclose drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, which contributes to more precise results.
  • Yields historical records: The test can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
