Located in Mahopac, New York, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those needing drug or alcohol tests involving hair samples, we offer expert services nationwide. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for drug screening. This has become preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judiciary processes, and monitored individuals favor it. The extended detection period of up to 90 days in a supervised collection process reduces cheating, though urine tests are precise for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a crucial resource for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drugs by incorporating biomarkers in the growing hair strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat tough to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands, equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil, near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, a perfect specimen for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and assessments over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. It's advised to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equal portion of body hair could be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The hair drug testing process comprises primarily of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This includes assuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not done by electronic chain custody systems.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug substances. Though Screening is an economical means to negate drug use in most samples, positive results must be affirmed to be court-valid. Any samples that are presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For presumptive positives in the Screening phase, additional hair from the original specimen prepares for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably low concentrations compared to other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug testing can track drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Falsifying a hair drug test is highly challenging, making the results highly reliable.
  • Reveals usage history: It can outline a usage pattern over a duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot signal recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variance: Factors like hair hue and individual hair growth rates might influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Even though referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test reviews the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
