At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Malverne, New York. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our focus is on hair testing, and we operate testing centers nationwide where this can be conducted. It generally requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other possible bespoke options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine screenings. Hair follicle tests are preferred by companies enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. The major advantage of hair tests is a longer detection period—up to 90 days—making them hard to deceive. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its fibers as it grows, offering a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use over time. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal substance use for approximately three months. It’s straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair—ideal for screening and confirmation processes. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. Reference to head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab process for a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial input of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Though it is a cost-efficient means to rule out drug use in most specimens, a positive result from Screening demands confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction stage. Drugs are separated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of executing hair drug screening.

Positive findings from the screening process require Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that are presumptively positive are washed before undergoing confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Altering results in a hair drug test is difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical data: It can exhibit a drug use trend over time, rather than indicating recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variable results: Variations such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," this examination assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing in Malverne, NY, the former stands out due to its superior detection capacity and reliability. Hair tests surpass traditional urine tests by offering a longer window for identifying drug usage, making them a preferred choice for thorough screening processes. Known for their high accuracy, hair follicle tests provide more reliable data, ensuring robust results in substance monitoring.

The benefits of hair follicle testing over urine tests are evident in Malverne's drug testing landscape. Hair tests are less prone to manipulation, ensuring that the collected samples provide genuine insights into an individual's substance history. Their capability to detect drug use over extended periods grants them an edge in accuracy and comprehensiveness, making them a preferred choice for detailed drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Malverne, NY, offers a significant advantage by extending the detection window for drug use. Unlike other methods, hair testing can trace substance intake for up to 90 days, giving employers a thorough overview of past usage patterns. This extended timeframe enables a broader insight into an individual's drug history, assisting in more informed decision-making.

The ability of hair follicle tests to detect drugs over a prolonged period presents a distinct benefit. Employers seeking to gain a comprehensive understanding of their employees' or applicants' substance habits can rely on this method for accurate information spanning months. This extended detection period aids businesses in creating a safer and more informed work environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
