Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Mayfield, NY. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol drug test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analyses. We have centers located in every city nationwide equipped to perform such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body hair may be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored substances.

The trend in drug testing methods over the years has increasingly favored hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now often request hair tests in lieu of urine tests. This type of test is chosen by entities with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation services. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection capability, up to 90 days. It's collected under supervision and is almost cheat-proof, though urine tests remain preferable for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug biomarkers within the fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about 3 months for drugs and alcohol. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield approximately 100mg, the optimal sample for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair. Other hair, such as facial and axillary, is referred to as body hair.

Process Overview

The processing of drug test results in a laboratory involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step wherein a sample is integrated into the lab's system. This step checks the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any requisite data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a primary check for drugs of abuse. Though it is a cost-effective measure for the majority of samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair from the initial sample is used in the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from the hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Hair tests are hard to fool, increasing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It shows an ongoing pattern of drug use instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't identify recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are usually pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
