Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle screening services in New Hempstead, NY. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair testing, with facilities across the nation to conduct these examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair screening can identify drug use, alcohol/ETG levels, or be tailored for other specialized testing needs.

Recently, drug testing protocols have increasingly adopted hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial courts, and addiction specialists are preferring hair tests over typical urine tests. Organizations with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation often utilize hair testing. Its key advantage lies in its ability to reveal drug use for up to 90 days, with direct observation during collection, making tampering highly improbable. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary fast check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening demand subsequent confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other techniques (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, when necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are tough to cheat, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals drug usage patterns over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine testing in New Hempstead, NY, offering clear advantages. Durability in detection is a major benefit, capturing substance use over extended periods. This comprehensive insight is unmatched by urine analysis, which is limited by a shorter detection window. Lacking possibilities for tampering, hair tests provide a robust solution for drug screening needs.

Unlike traditional urine tests, hair follicle methods illuminate a broader history of substance use—up to 90 days. This far exceeds the scope of urine tests, offering a reliable snapshot of an individual’s drug habits. Businesses and legal entities find this breadth essential for thorough evaluations, rendering hair testing a preferred choice in varied contexts.

Extended Detection Window

In New Hempstead, NY, hair follicle testing provides exceptional insight into drug use over an extended timeline, typically up to 90 days. This enduring detection period equips employers with a detailed substance history for applicants or workers, aiding in more informed recruitment and retention choices. The span of detection surpasses typical methods, capturing a fuller spectrum of usage patterns.

Hair follicle tests extend the capacity to observe substance use beyond current detection methods. With a three-month window, employers gain a wider view of drug use, helping to uphold stringent policy standards. This comprehensive approach offers unparalleled benefits by enveloping a period far longer than traditional tests, setting a new bar for in-depth screenings.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In New Hempstead, NY, the hair follicle test serves as a formidable tamper-resistant method for drug screening. The analysis is notably resistant to alterations, providing unquestionable results. By mitigating the risk of adulterated samples, this secure process reinforces trust in the outcomes, making it highly favored by employers and legal bodies alike.

The inherent design of hair follicle testing greatly diminishes fraudulent maneuvers. The testing protocol involves a closely monitored sample collection, significantly reducing opportunities for tampering. The assurance of authenticity and integrity in results bolsters confidence in the testing process, essential for stringent organizational and legal requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
