Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Niagara, New York. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol assessments, we specialize in hair testing with facilities available nationwide, ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom analyses.

Recently, the trend towards hair follicle drug testing has increased. Many companies, judicial bodies, and substance misuse experts now prefer it over the routine urine test. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers use hair tests for their extended drug detection period, typically lasting up to 90 days, collected under supervision, reducing the chance of deception. Yet, for determining recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in a hair strand can capture biomarkers, offering a prolonged record of substance use. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a 3-month period of drug and alcohol detection. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil, provides approximately 100mg of hair, which is an ideal sample size for analysis. For tests such as EtG, supplementary panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (including facial and axillary hairs).

Process Overview

There are four critical phases in the lab processing of drug testing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is recorded into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial, rapid inspection for illicit drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive result demands confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples with presumptive positive results from Screening necessitate further confirmation processes.

If a sample shows a preliminary positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a complex method to execute.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before Confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical usage insights: It offers an overview of drug consumption patterns over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth pace can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", it's the hair strand and not the scalp hair follicle that is examined.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Beats Urine: The Niagara, NY Advantage
Hair follicle assessments offer notable advantages over traditional urine analyses, particularly in terms of precision and longevity of detection. While urine tests provide a snapshot of recent drug usage, hair samples capture a comprehensive and accurate history, reducing false negatives and offering superior reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
