Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Nissequogue, New York. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we have testing centers available in cities across the nation, including Nissequogue. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body. Our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Over the years, hair follicle testing has gained popularity as a drug testing method. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This test is valued by organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process that is difficult to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When harvested close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to adulterate, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample quantity for testing and confirming. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is recommended to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair might be gathered. When discussing head hair, this strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial process of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes verifying that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid detection of drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold up in court. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is derived from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Low likelihood of cheating: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides longitudinal data: It can reflect a pattern of drug use over a span of time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
