In Ocean Beach, NY, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether you need alcohol or drug testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis with centers nationwide that can facilitate such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. These samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized options.

The preference for hair follicle testing has increased recently among employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists over the standard urine analysis. Preferred by those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, such assessments boast a 90-day detection window, overseen collection, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests are more reliable for recent drug use within last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, it can reveal a history of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp produces 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG enhancements or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair denote only scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory system. This incorporates confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. It is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in most samples; however, a positive screen mandates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that are preliminarily positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

For samples preliminarily positive in Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentration levels significantly lower than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug screening's complexity.

Confirmation of positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumed positivity are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests uncover drug use up to 90 days, unlike the shorter window seen in urine tests.
  • High cheating difficulty: Hair drug testing is notoriously difficult to manipulate, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: Offers insight into drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing comes at a higher cost compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" might be used, but the analysis targets the hair strand, not the sub-scalp follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Ocean Beach, NY, when comparing hair follicle assessments to traditional urine analyses, the former shines in detection accuracy. Hair tests provide a longer detection window, thus reliably revealing substance patterns unavailable through urine tests. These assessments assure organizations of the thoroughness and depth absent in standard urine alternatives, making them irreplaceable for comprehensive evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

Ocean Beach, NY's inclination towards hair follicle tests stems from its extended detection period. This method offers an up to 90-day window, providing clarity into an individual's substance habits far beyond the limited timeframe urine tests offer. Employers gain a panoramic insight, supporting informed decisions influenced by detailed substance histories.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Ocean Beach, NY stands out as a tamper-proof option, significantly minimizing sample adulteration threats. The resilience against tampering fosters reliable and incontestable outcomes, reassuring users of the authentic nature of results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
