Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance tests in Pekin, New York. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is delivered through testing sites across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair testing necessities.

Hair follicle drug testing has recently become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair drug tests rather than standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by zero-tolerance employers, the courts, and those on probation. This test's significant advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, being collected under observed conditions, and being nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers as the hair strand grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, making it the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to determine the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent measure of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the introductory processing of a sample inside a laboratory’s framework. This step ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched accurately, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody method.

Screening offers a preliminary quick analysis for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly measure to discount drug usage on most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court validity. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation during Extraction. This stage involves drug extraction from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation as required. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation in the laboratory is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves highly challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: Offers a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent activity: Detection of drugs in hair requires about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and personal hair growth variations might impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually evaluates the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine drug testing in Pekin, NY, hair testing takes the lead due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which may only detect recent substance use, hair tests offer a broader insight into an individual's drug history. This enhances the dependability of results, supporting informed decision-making for employers and other authorities needing comprehensive substance use data.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Pekin, NY, offer an extended detection window, revealing substance use up to 90 days back. This extensive window allows employers to gain a more detailed understanding of a potential or current employee's substance history, unlike shorter detection spans, providing a stronger foundation for maintaining a safe and compliant workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Pekin, NY, hair follicle testing offers a highly tamper-resistant method for drug detection. Unlike other testing forms, it significantly minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, thus delivering reliable and unquestionable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
