Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Remsenburg, New York. For those requiring drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is a leading provider, featuring centers nationwide that facilitate hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary for most analyses. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a prevalent method for substance detection, surpassing traditional tests like urine samples. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair-based testing. This method is favored in zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial requirements, and probation situations because it offers an extended drug use detection window, up to 90 days, via an observed procedure, making it highly tamper-resistant. Conversely, urine tests remain more precise for short-term detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer approximately a three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This step involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry that isn't already provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid examination for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positives during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair, albeit at a much lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening findings is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a briefer detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is quite difficult to cheat on a hair drug test, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapability of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in findings: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and traditional urine testing, the former decidedly leads in detection accuracy. Hair tests significantly outperform because they are less susceptible to evasion tactics popular with urine samples. Employers in Remsenburg, NY, can trust hair testing for its reliability and superior detection capabilities in maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing, reaching up to 90 days, is invaluable for employers in Remsenburg, NY. This extended timeframe provides a comprehensive understanding of an employee or applicant's substance use habits, far surpassing shorter-term tests like urine analysis. With prolonged insight, employers can make more informed decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The resilience against adulteration is a standout feature of hair follicle testing in Remsenburg, NY. This method minimizes the possibility of tampered samples, ensuring integrity in drug testing results. Employers and legal entities can depend on these tests to deliver uncontested data that withstands scrutiny, making it a dependable choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
