Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sands Point, New York. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair-based testing, with facilities available in various cities across the country to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body can be used. Hair tests are customizable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other substances.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method. Employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to specific needs of employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal bodies, and probationers. Their primary advantage lies in a prolonged detection window, spanning up to 90 days, observed during collection and extremely hard to falsify, though urine tests remain more effective for drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair holds a detailed archive of substance use, capturing biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to nearly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For more extensive testing such as EtG and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be obtainable, a similar volume of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specify scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main components of processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory framework. This process ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody program.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Though a cost-efficient way to rule out drug use in most samples, positive results in Screening necessitate confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test as presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation for any positive screen is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in alignment with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Tracks past usage: It can illustrate a history of drug use over an extended duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent usage detection: Drugs generally become detectable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates may impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
