Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Sparkill, New York. Specializing in this type of testing, we have facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is typically required. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly include the hair follicle test. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over standard urine tests. This method is chosen by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary programs. Its significant benefit is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervision to prevent tampering, though urine tests remain more precise for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Perceived as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers an extended timeline by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands. When acquired near the scalp, hair tests can yield a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk for tampering, and simplifies shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample containing around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional options, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we strictly refer to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab handling of a drug test result can be divided into four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory system, verifying appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary and rapid assessment for common drugs of abuse. Although cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated for legal admissibility. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should the Screening phase return a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. This stage involves removing drugs from the hair at a considerably lower concentration than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing poses the greatest challenge in execution.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo a cleansing process before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 standards of accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for a maximum of 90 days, whereas urine tests have a much shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to manipulation: The integrity of hair drug tests is hard to compromise, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage profile: This method can outline a drug usage trend over an extended period, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to determine recent usage: Drug detection in hair typically requires a 5-7 day period post-usage.
  • Higher cost: Compared to alternative drug testing methods, hair tests generally incur greater expenses.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of detected drug metabolites.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
