Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Union, New York. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, we excel in hair follicle assessments and maintain testing facilities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is generally required from either the head or body. These assays detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing possibilities.

Recently, drug screening methodologies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are progressively favoring them over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle exams are integral for entities with strict anti-drug policies, legal authorities, and individuals undergoing probation. Their main advantage is an extended drug detection period, up to 90 days, with supervised collection, and it’s nearly infallible to deceive. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of a growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drug use. Hair is simple to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be obtained. When discussing head hair, we refer only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample into a lab system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal situations. Samples that screened presumptively positive need an additional confirmation.

When a sample screens presumptively positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in the Extraction step. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples screening presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test results in greater accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: This test can highlight a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Union, NY, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests by offering enhanced accuracy and reliability. While traditional urine tests can indicate recent drug usage, they often fall short in providing a historical view of substance consumption. Hair testing, on the other hand, meticulously records drug use over an extended period, making it a preferable option.

Employers favor hair testing for its robust detection window and dependable results. Unlike urine tests that may be subject to manipulation or provide limited data, hair tests capture detailed information about substance use. This ensures compliance with strict drug-free workplace policies and a comprehensive evaluation of an individual's substance history.

Extended Detection Window

Union, NY employers benefit from hair follicle testing due to its extensive detection period of up to 90 days. This span enables a thorough assessment of an applicant or employee's substance consumption history, significantly aiding in making informed hiring and policy compliance decisions.

The lengthy detection window ensures that employers have access to comprehensive data regarding an individual's long-term substance use. This insight is invaluable for those aiming to maintain safe and productive work environments, as it ensures that critical decisions are based on reliable and comprehensive information.

The enduring detection capabilities of hair follicle testing help businesses remain vigilant in monitoring substance abuse, empowering them to maintain integrity and safety in the workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Union, NY are recognized for their resistance to tampering, offering a high level of sample integrity. Unlike urine tests, which can be easily manipulated, hair tests preserve their reliability by inherently reducing the risk of adulteration, ensuring unquestionable results.

This significant advantage means that the possibilities for cheating are minimized, providing employers with confidence in the testing outcomes. The robust process of collecting and analyzing hair samples deters any potential for deceit, thereby safeguarding the accuracy of the tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
