Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Westmere, New York. Specializing in hair testing, our centers, located in every city across the nation, are fully equipped to administer hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has gained prominence in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often favor hair tests over urine tests. With their zero-tolerance drug policies, employers, courts, and probationers utilize hair follicle tests for their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the standard for screening usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective mechanism for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol consumption for a period of up to three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields about 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and authentication. For EtG extensions, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest employing a jeweler’s scale for accuracy in weighing the hair. Should scalp hair be lacking, a corresponding quantity of body hair is an alternative. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This entails confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude substance usage for most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent verification.

Upon a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is retrieved and processed for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a complex methodology to execute.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing where applicable before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Perks of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to evasion: Tampering with a hair drug test is considerably challenging, ensuring higher accuracy in results.
  • Offers retrospective data: It can reflect a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than merely capturing recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Incognito recent consumption: It generally takes about 5-7 days before substances are identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair proliferation can influence the amount of drug metabolites observed in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
