Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services available in Youngstown, New York. Whether requiring a hair drug assessment or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with centers in cities nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is preferred, though body hair can be used generally. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

In recent times, incorporating hair follicle drug tests into screening methods has become increasingly common. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now require a hair-based drug test instead of the usual urine analysis. Hair follicle drug screenings appeal to employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, court systems, and probationers. The standout advantage of hair drug testing is a prolonged detection window, spanning up to 90 days, under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine analysis remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now recognized as an effective approach for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drugs by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing in a laboratory involves four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary task of processing a sample within a laboratory's framework. This task includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry not completed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a quick preliminary check for substances of abuse. While cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening require further verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are drawn from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug testing.

Positive results in the Screening phase undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, contrasted with the shorter span of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Shows usage trends: It reveals drug usage trends over an extended period, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Individual factors, including hair color and growth differences, can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
