Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessment in Belfast, North Carolina. If a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair diagnostics, offering centers across all cities Nationwide to carry out these exams. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair exams can discern drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing options.

The hair follicle drug test has increasingly become a popular method in recent times. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over conventional urine exams. Employers with zero tolerance for drug use, courts, and those on probation rely on hair tests. Its advantage lies in a longer detection span of up to 90 days, a supervised collection, and cheating resistance. Yet, for recent drug use in the last 5 days, urine exams remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lengthy record of substances and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When samples are gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal evidence of alcohol and drugs for as long as an approximately three-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG assessments, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures that generate a drug test result are primarily divided into Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample's processing into a laboratory's framework. This phase includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any other necessary data entry not provided by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method for disregarding drug usage for the majority of tests, positive screenings require confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that test positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a concentration much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo a preliminary wash before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing its result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insights: It provides a record of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent ingestion: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing presents several advantages over urine testing in Belfast, NC. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair follicle tests offer superior detection accuracy and reliability over an extended timeframe. Hair tests uncover long-term patterns of drug use, providing a more comprehensive picture compared to other methods.

While urine tests detect recent drug use efficiently, they fall short in revealing a complete history. For a more all-encompassing approach to identifying substance use, particularly with zero-tolerance policies, hair follicle testing is preferred.

Extended Detection Window

One of the primary advantages of hair follicle testing in Belfast, NC is its extended detection window. Able to identify substances used up to 90 days prior, this method provides employers with a long-term view of an individual's drug history.

This comprehensive insight is invaluable for assessing an applicant's or employee's past behaviors, offering assurance in drug-free policy adherence and providing a basis for informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The robust nature of hair follicle testing in Belfast, NC minimizes the chance of tampering, ensuring the reliability of results. Unlike methods that can be more easily manipulated, hair samples are less susceptible to adulteration.

This method offers an impenetrable measure of drug use, maintaining the integrity of the testing process and the trust of those who depend on accurate and authentic results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
